Asheville hiking trails

Spring in the air with the bright promise of summer close behind. If you’re like us, the warming weather has you chomping at the bit to get out into the sun and great outdoors. Luckily, our location in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a paradise of cascading waterfalls, sweeping vistas, and lush forests. Come stretch your legs on Asheville hiking trails and reap the reward of unforgettable adventures.

There’s plenty of opportunity for outdoor fun in the Asheville area, especially around Bent Creek Lodge. In fact, some of the area’s most popular hiking trails are just minutes away. Stunning outdoor destinations like the Bent Creek Experimental Forest and the NC Arboretum, for example. Consequently, outdoor enthusiasts staying with us won’t have to travel far to scratch that trail itch.

That being said, there are even more beautiful hiking trails within easy reach of our Asheville bed and breakfast. Popular state parks and national forests offering abundant wildlife, lush foliage, sparkling waters, and panoramic views.

DuPont State Forest – Waterfall Wonderland

DuPont State Recreational Forest, located just 40 minutes from Asheville, is a must-visit for hikers who love waterfalls. This 10,000-acre forest is home to several spectacular falls, including Triple Falls, High Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. The Hooker Falls Trail is a short, family-friendly hike leading to a stunning 12-foot waterfall. For a more extended trek, the Triple Falls and High Falls Loop offers a moderate 3-mile journey past two of the park’s most iconic waterfalls.

Pisgah National Forest – Endless Adventure

Covering over 500,000 acres, Pisgah National Forest is a haven for hikers looking to immerse themselves in unspoiled wilderness. One of the most popular trails is the Looking Glass Rock Trail, a challenging 6.5-mile hike that rewards adventurers with panoramic views from the summit. Another favorite is the Graveyard Fields Loop, an easy-to-moderate 3.5-mile hike featuring waterfalls, wildflower meadows, and vibrant fall foliage.

For those seeking a true backcountry experience, the Black Balsam Knob and Tennent Mountain Loop offers a stunning 5-mile trek through high-elevation balds, showcasing some of the most breathtaking views along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Max Patch: A Hiker’s Dream

For an unforgettable Appalachian experience, Max Patch is a must-visit. This 4,600-foot bald mountain on the Appalachian Trail offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the Smokies and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The 1.5-mile loop is perfect for a leisurely hike, while longer trails allow for deeper exploration.

Blue Ridge Parkway – Asheville Corridor

Bent Creek Lodge is located less than a mile from the NC Arboretum entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway, allowing for very easy access to stunningly scenic drives.  At this time, unfortunately, only a small stretch of the Parkway known as the Asheville Corridor is open in our part of North Carolina.

The Asheville Corridor is a beautiful, 15 mile section of two-lane highway running from the entrance at the NC Arboretum to the entrance for the Folk Art Center. Several good trailheads exist along this section. Lesser known, unmarked trails that locals enjoy. Just look for the pull-off parking areas, marked only by car ruts and a well-worn opening into the woods.

You’ll also find the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center along the Corridor.  This beautiful building contains wonderful, museum quality exhibits showcasing the natural and cultural history of the area, as well as the recreational opportunities offered by the region. Open year-round, the visitor center features Parkway information, an America’s National Parks store, and a Blue Ridge National Heritage Area information desk.

Two other, popular attractions bookend the Asheville Corridor: NC Arboretum and the Southern Highland Craft Guild’s Folk Art Center.

The North Carolina Arboretum, just three minutes from the Lodge,  features miles of scenic hiking trails through 434 incredible acres of cultivated forests and gardens. Absolutely worth a visit, no matter the season but particularly worthy in spring and fall.

The Southern Highland Craft Guild’s Folk Art Center can be found at the other end of the open section of parkway, at milepost 382.  Free to the public –  it offers a retail store on the first floor and amazing museum on the second floor.  Hiking trails surround the museum, providing easy opportunities for an exploratory walk.
